In July, the Kansas City restaurant community lost a farmer and a friend when Alan Garrison died suddenly of a heart attack.

in Holt, Mo., raised chickens, ducks, turkeys and pigs. He sold Windhaven’s all-natural meat and eggs to The Local Pig butcher shop and several restaurants, including The Farmhouse, The Westside Local and Renee Kelly’s Harvest.
Garrison also helped build community among local food producers and restaurants, says Heather Searls, a manager at The Farmhouse.
“He created a network of farmers around KC,” Searls says. “He made a huge effort to bridge the communication gap between the tiny farms and the chefs.”
The hard-working farmer became a beloved member of the local food community.
“We all really cared about Alan,” Searls says.
Now Kansas City chefs are giving back to Garrison’s family. Six local restaurants are coming together Sunday for a benefit dinner called“All About the Pig.”
The dinner, 6-10 p.m. Sunday at the River Market event space, 140 Walnut St., features pork- and chicken-inspired small plates and tastings from six restaurants: The Farmhouse, The Rieger Hotel Grill Exchange, Blue Bird Bistro, Novel, The Westside Local and Voltaire. Beer and wine will also be available at the event.
Tickets cost $25 and areavailable online. Proceeds will go to a college fund for Garrison’s teenage son. For more info or to RSVP, go to the “All about the pig” Facebook page.
