named Rye to its50 Best New Restaurant Nominees 2013
The nod was a surprise to Garrelts and Megan, his wife/pastry chef/partner. The couple was vacationing in Delaware when they started receiving congratulatory texts for their chef friends across the country. “We were like, congratulations for what? It was a really nice surprise,” Colby said by phone.
Andrew Knowlton, the columnist who put the Bon Appetit list had this to say about Rye: “Husband-and-wife Colby and Megan Garrelts cut loose at this relaxed down-home, Midwest-inspired joint, where Colby (fresh off a James Beard Award win for Best Chef: Midwest) turns out crispy fried chicken and pastry chef Megan oversees the homespun desserts. Rye delivers on Southern comforts, but the kitchen also has a mean way with a steak if you’re craving a dry-aged rib eye (and frankly, who isn’t?).”
Knowlton also mentions Megan’s desserts. Secret ingredient: lard.
