Since I write about food, you might assume I collect salt and pepper shakers or antique silver ladles or even cookbooks. But my little quirk: I collect the annual editions of “Best Food Writing,” a LifeLong Books anthology edited by Holly Hughes, now in its 15th year.
When it comes to reading, I’m a grazer, helping myself to a morsel of Michael Pollan, a dab of Calvin Trillin or a bite of Gabrielle Hamilton. The 2014 edition includes juicy examples by Barry Estabrook, John Kessler and Monica Bhide. I was honored to have stories I wrote for The Star included in two past editions: 2008 (about heritage chickens raised by Frank Reese at Good Shepherd Farm near Lindsborg, Kan.) and 2011 editions (about life in a food desert).
The entries come from book authors, journalists, chef-writers and up-and-coming bloggers, and reflect the edible zeitgeist. So every October I wait for a review copy of “Best Food Writing” to show up on my desk. But this year I couldn’t wait. I dug out my past copies a few weeks ago so I could sticky-note particularly well-done and insightful passages to refer to when I present “The Art of Food Writing” at ChoppedCon on Oct. 24 in the River Market.
