The newest year-round beer from Boulevard Brewing Co. should please whiskey lovers.
Whiskey Barrel Stout, a new addition to the Kansas City brewery’s Smokestack Series, is an imperial stout aged in emptied whiskey barrels. It pours into local bars on tap on Monday, Sept. 11, and will be available in 4-packs of 12-ounce bottles on Tuesday.
Kansas City gets the first taste of Whiskey Barrel Stout, but it will soon spill into Boulevard’s other distribution regions.
The imperial stout is brewed with two-row pale malt, flaked oats, chocolate malt and dark brown sugar. Its sweetness is balanced by a hint of bitterness from Magnum and Columbus hops. Flavor notes of dates and plum come from Scottish yeast.

The brew is aged in fresh whiskey barrels from a variety of distillers, then blended two to one with fresh beer before it’s bottled or kegged. Whiskey Barrel Stout might taste a bit like whiskey, but at 11.8 percent alcohol, it’s not as strong as the straight stuff (but stronger than most beers).
Boulevard and other craft breweries typically release rich, malty beers in the fall. Boulevard’s other autumn seasonals include Bob’s ’47 Oktoberfest and Tough Kitty Milk Stout, both out now.
Next week brings the return of Cranberry Orange Radler, a lighter thirst-quenching brew made with tart blood orange and cranberry juice. It should be on shelves through early 2018.
Also coming on Tuesday: Cabernet Cask Imperial Stout, a limited-release Smokestack Series beer that took two years to make. The 100 percent barrel-aged beer, available only in 750-milliliter bottles, packs aromas of cocoa, Cabernet wine and figs. Take a sip and you might detect notes of espresso and caramel.
Like Whiskey Barrel Stout, Cabernet Cask Imperial Stout should appeal to whiskey lovers because it was aged in barrels that previously held (deep breath) Jefferson’s Reserve Groth Reserve Cask Finish Very Old Straight Bourbon Whiskey.
Boulevard is also working on a cider to be released later this year. Details to come.
