Question: What’s the best restaurant in Kansas?

Answer: Lawrence’s Free State Brewing Co., according to a recent survey conducted by the Kansas Restaurant & Hospitality Association.

Joe’s Kansas City Bar-B-Que took the No. 2 spot in the 2017 survey, which asked 500 Kansans to rank their favorite places to eat. The famed barbecue joint has locations in Kansas City, Kan., Leawood and Olathe.

Two restaurants tied for third: 715 in Lawrence and Fiorella’s Jack Stack Barbecue, which has a location in Overland Park (the other four Jack Stacks are on the Missouri side).

In the 2016 survey, Joe’s Kansas City Bar-B-Que took the top spot, followed by Free State Brewing Co. and The Burger Stand, a gourmet burger cafe with locations in Lawrence and Topeka.

Survey participants applauded several more Lawrence restaurants, including Genovese Italian Restaurant, Ladybird Diner, India Palace, The Mad Greek, Wheatfields Bakery, Merchants Pub & Plate and Paisano’s Ristorante, which also has a Topeka location.
