Q: I wish my friend would quit bugging me about Jesus and heaven and all that. All I’m interested in is having a good time right now, and I’ll take my chances when it comes to heaven. Maybe heaven doesn’t even exist, and this is all there is. — J.C.
A: Have you ever asked yourself why your friend is bugging you (as you put it)? It’s because your friend cares about you, and doesn’t want to see you go through life on the wrong road. Be grateful someone cares about you this much, even at the risk of being rejected by you.
But you have an even greater friend, one who cares for you even more than this one does. That friend is Jesus, and even though you don’t want anything to do with him right now, he still loves you and yearns for you to become part of his family forever. He knows all about you, and one of the things he knows about you is that you will never find the happiness and peace you seek by living only for yourself. I often think of Jesus’ warning: “Wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it” (Matthew 7:13).
Don’t live only for the moment or only for this life, and don’t deceive yourself into thinking this life is all there is. Ahead of us is eternity, and life’s greatest joy comes from living with the hope of heaven in our hearts. And we know heaven is real, because Jesus Christ died and rose again to make it possible for us to go there.
Don’t let anything keep you from giving your life to Jesus. Instead, admit your need for Christ’s forgiveness, and by faith welcome him into your life today.
