Dash down Ward Parkway leads the week

Rock the Parkway is a great source of pride for civic boosters. The more than 8,000 participants in the event and the many people cheering the athletes on will be reminded of the scenery along Ward Parkway and around Loose Park that are often taken for granted.

The fifth edition of the half-marathon and 5K also serves as a fundraiser for Union Station’s Science City. The live entertainment, refreshments, shirts and Mylar blankets that reward runners enhance Rock the Parkway’s celebratory atmosphere. Detractors who decry the temporary inconvenience of blocked streets might consider taking part in the fun.

Bob Anderson looks like just another highly motivated and exceptionally fit athlete as he participates in marathons. Yet without Anderson’s influence, the sport of long-distance running might be far less popular today. Anderson founded Runner’s World magazine while he was a student at Shawnee Mission West High School.

“A Long Run,” a new documentary about Anderson, includes testimonials from stars of the sport about the encouragement they derived from Runner’s World. The film also tracks Anderson’s goal to run 50 races in 2012. Anderson will participate in a question-and-answer session after the documentary is screened on Thursday.
