Eight Grandview High School students were injured Saturday evening when their school bus was struck by a suspected drunk driver while they were returning home from a track meet, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
The accident was reported at 7:25 p.m. on Northwest U.S. 50 and Missouri Route Z in Johnson County.
The bus was traveling from a district track meet at Holden High School, school district officials said on their Facebook page.
"We are grateful that initial reports are that none of our students or staff suffered serious injuries," district officials said.
After the accident, the driver of the minivan fled on foot but was later arrested in Bates City. The driver was returned to the crash site, where he was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, the highway patrol reported in a tweet.
The injured students were taken to several hospitals with injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening. Westbound traffic on U.S. 50 was diverted while investigators gathered evidence.
