Three car passengers and 11 bus passengers taken to the hospital after an ATA bus and car collide near Children's Mercy. One was critically injured.

Authorities have identified an Independence man who was killed in a collision between a car and RideKC bus late Friday morning as Dennis E. Schoellhorn.

The wreck happened around 11:30 a.m. at 25th and Charlotte streets near Children's Mercy Hospital. Kansas City police said Schoellhorn, 56, who was a rear-seat passenger in the car, was critically injured. A woman and a 2-year-old in the car also were injured, and all three were taken to a hospital.

On Monday, Kansas City police announced that Schoellhorn died from his injuries.

It appeared the bus collided with the driver's side of the car. After the crash, the bus was facing west on 25th Street, and the car was facing south on Charlotte.

The bus was westbound on 25th Street, which does not have a stop. The car was southbound on Charlotte, which has a stop sign.

The intersection used to be controlled by traffic light, but people who work in the area said that the intersection was recently changed so it only has a stop sign for traffic on Charlotte Avenue.

The collision remains under investigation.
