Fall is a wonderful time of year: Days are cooler, nights are crisp and leaves are beginning to fall.
Right into your gutters.
Gutters play a vital role in protecting your home. They are the first step in taking the rain that’s running off your roof and moving it away from your house where it can’t damage the wood, siding, interior walls and/or foundation.
The problem is that as good as gutters are in capturing that runoff, they also catch almost everything else that’s falling from the sky – mostly leaves, but also twigs, dirt, and seeds.

All that debris clogs the gutter. Those clogs can cause big problems for your home: Overflowing water can get behind the gutter and cause wood rot and can even get into interior walls and soffits.
“People don’t realize that bad gutters can cause foundation, landscaping, driveway problems and lots of wood rot,” said Travis Burch, a co-owner along with Carter Clond of K-Guard Leaf Free Gutter System. K-Guard is a family-owned business in Lenexa that serves all of Kansas and Missouri.
“A lot of it you can’t even see until water is getting into the house because your gutters are out of sight and out of mind.”
There are two solutions to the problem of clogged gutters. One is you can clean your gutters frequently. Burch said gutters need to be cleaned five or six times a year, and at least three of those cleanings should be in the fall when leaves are dropping. Even if you decide to clean your gutters – and Burch says most of his customers have not cleaned their gutters recently, if ever – doing so requires numerous trips up and down a ladder, which is risky.
According to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, 500,000 people are treated for ladder-related injuries every year and about 300 of these accidents are fatal.
The other solution is to replace your gutters with K-Guard, which combines a foolproof, guaranteed method of keeping leaves and other debris out of your gutter with a system that moves more water away from your house than any other product on the market.
Burch said K-Guard is a complete system of gutters and downspouts. It is the largest leaf-free gutter system on the market – 40 percent larger than others – allowing it to handle more water than other leading gutters. Because the gutter can handle so much water, it needs a downspout that’s larger than the standard 2 by 3 inches. The K-Guard downspout is 4 by 3 inches, and can move twice the volume of water of the smaller downspouts.
The K-Guard gutters are covered by a hood that is guaranteed to keep leaves and other debris out of the gutter, while allowing water to enter the gutter in two ways. First, water can enter from the front, where through the principle of liquid adhesion water sticks to the curve of the hood and falls into the gutter. K-Guard also features a rear drainage channel that handles water during heavy downpours or when wind blows water back toward the house.
K-Guard gutters are attached directly to the fascia boards by internal hangers that are only 24 inches apart. The hangers are situated above the flood plain in the gutter and are made from high strength all-weather polymers. They provide strength and support for the gutters front to back and will last forever. K-Guard gutters do not touch the roof, so there is no chance of voiding any roof warranty.
Speaking of warranties, the K-Guard system is fully guaranteed, and not only the products and workmanship. The K-Guard system has a clog-free, maintenance-free warranty, too, and comes in 37 colors.
“Since it is a complete system, we are putting our warranty on everything: The cover, the downspouts, the gutter, everything,” Clond said. He said if someone buys an add-on gutter cover, that company will warranty the cover, but not any other problems you might have with gutters or downspouts.
“With K-Guard, you never have to get up on the ladder again or worry about your gutters,” he said. “There are more fun things to do on the weekend. You don’t have to worry when it’s storming outside. You get that peace of mind, and that’s what we want for all our customers.”
