“Excellent” or not?
Harry Shearer, the voice of dozens of characters on Fox’s “The Simpsons,” tweeted late Wednesday that he was leaving the show for “freedom to do other work.” The cartoon was recently renewed for its 27th and 28th seasons. Shearer played the heartless billionaire Mr. Burns (a malevolent “excellent” was one of his catchphrases) and the ever-peppy Ned “Hey-Diddly-Ho!” Flanders, who annoyed neighbor Homer Simpson to no end.
In a statement to the New York Times, executive producer Al Jean said “the show will go on.” Though die-hard fans have a hard picturing that succeeding.
Others think this is the stake the show, which once was a pop culture phenom, finally needed.
