Award-winning chef Debbie Gold is leaving the American Restaurant.
Gold, who joined the Crown Center restaurant in mid-2008, plans to depart on April 13 for another Kansas City opportunity.
She was the American’s co-chef from 1994 to 2001 and was honored with a 1999 James Beard Award for Best Chef: Midwest. She also has appeared on Bravo’s Top Chef Masters. She also owned and operated 40 Sardines restaurant in Overland Park.
Gold said she leaving the American, at 200 E. 25th St., to develop concepts and menus for a newly formed, locally-based restaurant group.
“I look at it more as the next step in my career,” she said. She said more information will be available on the restaurant group later this month.
Jamie Jamison, general manager of the American, said he was on a nationwide search to find “our restaurant’s next great chef.”
The American Restaurant will celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2014.
