Two KC chefs vie for Food & Wine award

Food & Wine is letting readers pick the best chefs in the country.

Ten chefs are in the running for The People’s Best New Chef: Midwest, including two from the Kansas City area: Patrick Ryan from Port Fonda in Westport and Carl Thorne-Thomsen from Story in Prairie Village.

The winner won’t be announced until March 18, so there’s still plenty of time to vote. Other candidates include Cassy Vires from Home Wine Kitchen in Maplewood, Mo. and Justin Haifley from The Tavern in St. Louis.

At 11 a.m. Monday, Ryan was in first place, with 31.6 percent of the vote, and Thorne-Thomsen was tied for fifth, with 8.1 percent of the vote.

No matter who wins, it’s been a good year for both chefs. Port Fonda was recently featured in the New York Times (and the Kansas City Star) and Thorne-Thomsen is a semifinalist for Best Chef: Midwest in the James Beard Awards. Finalists for those prestigious restaurant industry awards will also be unveiled March 18.
