In January, the Kansas City Academy, 7933 Main St., launched the Grassroots Concert Series in its 70-person performing arts theater. This weekend, the academy is throwing a three-day Grassroots Music Festival that will feature several Kansas City/Lawrence bands and artists performing a variety of music. The festival, the academy’s first, is one sign that the series and theater have been a success during this inaugural year, said Brandon Draper, an academy faculty member who has performed for the series. “The series has been really great,” he said. “The artists love the space and audiences have enjoyed the small, cozy environment.”...
