‘Unbroken’

Opens at 7 p.m. Wednesday

Angelina Jolie directed this adaptation of Laura Hillenbrand’s astounding biography of Louis Zamperini. It’s not often that someone’s Olympic career is the least interesting aspect of his life, but so it is for the man who competed in the 5,000-meter run in Berlin in 1936. A few years later he joined the Air Corps and, during World War II, survived a plane crash and floated for 47 days in the ocean. He was then captured by Japanese forces and tortured for years as a prisoner of war. The movie stars Jack O’Connell, who is being heralded as the Next Big Thing. Rated PG-13 | Time: 2:17

‘Into the Woods’

Opens at 7 p.m. Wednesday

Rob Marshall (“Chicago”) directs this adaptation of the Broadway musical phenomenon about a witch (Meryl Streep) making life difficult for Little Red Riding Hood (Lilla Crawford), Cinderella (Anna Kendrick), Rapunzel (Mackenzie Mauzy) and Jack (Daniel Huttlestone), the one with the beanstalk. Johnny Depp, Chris Pine, Emily Blunt and Lucy Punch round out the star-studded cast. Rated PG | Time: 2:05

‘The Gambler’

Opens at 7 p.m. Wednesday

Mark Wahlberg plays the titular character in this remake of the 1974 crime drama of the same name. Jim Bennett is a lit professor with some extracurricular activities that include sleeping with a student and, more dangerously, betting on blackjack. He’s a big winner, but isn’t big on putting anything in the bank, which is how he ends up a quarter of a million dollars in the hole and beholden to some scary characters. Rated R | Time: 1:52

‘The Imitation Game’

Opens at 7 p.m. Wednesday

Benedict Cumberbatch is getting raves for his portrayal of Alan Turing, the eccentric, embattled British genius who built a machine (arguably the first computer) that could crack the complicated encryption code used by Nazis in their messages during World War II. Rated PG-13 | Time: 1:54

‘Big Eyes’

Opens Thursday

Director Tim Burton gets serious with this drama recounting the life of the acclaimed 1950s painter Margaret Keane (Amy Adams) and the ensuing battles with her husband (Christoph Waltz), who started taking credit for her work. Rated PG-13 | Time: 1:46

‘The Interview’

Opens Thursday

We get to see Seth Rogen and James Franco on Christmas Day after all. After canceling it due to hackers’ threats on theaters, Sony is allowing a limited release of the comedy that sends the hapless pair to North Korea to take out its leader Kim Jong Un. It’s playing at Alamo Drafthouse. Rated R | Time: 1:52
