Dutch first-time writer-director Sam de Jong sets this coming-of-age drama in an Amsterdam housing project.
Teenage Ayoub (Ayoub Elasri), the Moroccan son of a junkie, wants to impress a girl (Sigrid ten Napel), so he falls in with a Lamborghini-driving kingpin (rapper Freddy Tratlehner).
Critics are intrigued:
▪ David Rooney, The Hollywood Reporter: “Even if de Jong’s command of the shifting styles is inconsistent, the movie has a quirky spirit that makes it easy to enjoy.”
▪ Ian S. Port, Village Voice: “A bit laborious at times. Still, ‘Prince’ gets by, mostly, on look, momentum, and an underlying sweetness.”
▪ Jonathan Romney, Screen Daily: “Its stylistic brio makes ‘Prince’ enough of a live wire to bode well for de Jong’s future.”
