Director Gareth Edwards launched his career with 2010’s “Monsters,” earning the bona fides to move up to the big-budget “Godzilla.” Now director Tom Green makes his feature debut with this sequel, in which the giant aliens from the original continue to mill about, this time in the Middle East, while soldiers try to figure out what to do about them.
Most, but not all, reviews have been negative:
▪ Peter Debruge, Variety: “Not so much a sequel as another stultifying character drama set in a world overrun by aliens.… Though the sequel features far more footage of the giant beasts, including a spectacular nighttime scene in which one of the bioluminescent creatures ejects phosphorescent spores into the desert sky, the story remains stubbornly focused on relatively uninteresting human concerns.”
▪ Leslie Felperin, The Hollywood Reporter: “The film certainly gets stronger and more compelling as it goes on, thanks in part to intense emoting on the part of its cast.”
▪ Rob Staeger, Village Voice: “The film defies any audience desire for satisfaction or closure: The creatures remain, the war remains, and all anyone’s efforts amount to is death.”
