Haim, Modest Mouse and a new fest for workers top this week's music

This week, we’ve got some A-listers in town, like the sisters from Haim. We’ve got some trailblazers and bands that have inspired a generation of music like Kim Deal of The Breeders and Isaac Brock of Modest Mouse in town.

We’ve got a brand new fest whose goal is to educate, entertain and celebrate working people, called Workers Revival Fest. And we’ve got one of my favorite voices in Kansas City hip-hop celebrating the release of his new EP, Duncan Burnett.

And that’s just five of the shows!

Those are our picks and highlights for shows to catch this week. Keep reading for more info and some interesting videos. See you at a show!

05/10 Haim/Lizzo at The Uptown

Check out Haim Live from The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon HERE

The three sisters in Haim got their roots in what sounds like a concept for a Disney television show. As a family, the sisters and their mom and dad would sing cover songs under the name Rockinghaim. Fast forward to 2012 and their name became known to millions with the massive hit, “Forever."

That was followed by more hits and even Taylor Swift became a fan. At Swift’s KC tour stop in 2015, a video of Haim was played on the huge screens during one of Swift's many wardrobe changes.

What I’m getting at here is, how is Haim not selling out rooms like Sprint Center yet? They played Coachella last month, and have sold out shows all over this country, I’d have to imagine this would be the last tour that you’ll be able to see them in intimate theaters. And make sure you’re there early to catch Lizzo from Houston, Texas.

05/11 and 05/12 Workers Revival Fest at recordBar

FRI: Downtown Boys/Red Kate/Friendship Commanders/Ebony Tusks/Nublvckcity; SAT: Baracutanga/Rev. Sekou/Austin Lucas/Scruffy & the Janitors/Lovergurl

Check out Rev Sekou doing an amazingly soulful session for Paste magazine HERE

This is going to be a great two-day event at recordBar. At first glance I was drawn to this event because of the eclectic lineup, from the socially minded hip-hop of Ebony Tusks, to the deep and moving soul of Rev Sekou (who blew me away at the KC Folk Festival back in February); from the punk music of Red Kate to Americana with Austin Lucas.

I really like this lineup, but music is just one part of the event. The goal of the inaugural Workers Revival Fest is to “celebrate work in all its forms and teach one another how to stand up to corporate power, support working people, and come together to demand higher pay and a better quality of life.”

In addition to the 10 bands playing the fest, the event will feature speakers talking about labor rights and issues. There also will be workshops on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with some sessions titled, "Know Your Rights at Work" and "Organizing 101." For more info, click HERE.

05/11 The Breeders at The Truman

Have a look at The Breeders on Tiny Desk Concert HERE.

In 1993 I was a student at Bishop LeBlond (Catholic) High School in St. Joe. My obsession with music had already begun.

While I was still trying to figure out all the things Eddie Vedder was singing about on Pearl Jam’s album, "Ten," I heard “Cannonball” by The Breeders. For me, it still stands out as one of the most recognizable songs from my youth. That intro with her soundchecking, the low roar and hum of voices and guitars, then the simple rhythmic tapping of drum sticks followed by that bass line. It blew my young mind.

If you like alternative music or indie rock and you haven’t seen The Breeders, this show should be on your radar. Ask anyone who saw them last time through KC, in 2014 at old recordBar.

05/11 Modest Mouse at Starlight

Check out Modest Mouse live on CBS This Morning: Saturday Sessions HERE

Modest Mouse is one of those bands you could start with on a Pandora station and end up with an amazing playlist to follow. This once Seattle-based band now calls Portland, Ore., home and has been making music for 25 years. They have entertained a couple generations of fans.

With interesting lyrics, bouncy choruses full of twisting metaphors and that unmistakable voice from frontman, Isaac Brock, if you appreciate good music it’s hard not to love this band. They haven’t put out a new album for a few years, but that doesn’t mean some new stuff won’t be played when they take the stage out at Starlight.

05/13 Duncan Burnett x RIOT/Payge Turner/Le Grand at recordBar, 'The Almighty' EP release show

Check out Duncan Burnett HERE, how about those horns!

Duncan Burnett is one of my favorite hip-hop acts. He performs socially minded, smart and positive hip-hop. Also, when he plays a live show, he brings a full live band with him and it’s usually stacked with some of the best jazz musicians in town.

He works hard on stage to put on a great show. His set at Boulevardia last summer blew people away!

He has also spoken at community events like TEDxYouth@KC. You can watch his talk HERE.

On Sunday at recordBar he’ll celebrate the release of his new EP, "The Almighty," and I’m sure he’ll pull out all of the stops and make it a very memorable night. Also on the bill is Payge Turner, she has a voice that will stop you in your tracks.
