Chicano Batman will be at The Madrid on April 26.
Chicano Batman will be at The Madrid on April 26. Submitted

It’s a busy week for concerts in KC.

Early in the week there are two massive shows at Providence Amphitheater (formerly known as Sandstone). Jack White is there on Tuesday (see rules about the show here) and then Odesza is there on Wednesday. Also on Wednesday, Lord Huron is at The Midland and Katy Guillen and the Girls play a pre-game concert at The K.

And then there are two great sold-out shows this week too: Rainbow Kitten Surprise at The Madrid on Wednesday and Alvvays at recordBar on Thursday.

Go ahead and forward this article to your friends who say, “There’s nothing to do in KC.” The calendar is full and the sun should be shining, so get out and catch a concert or two.

Here are our highlights for this week.

04/26 Chicano Batman/Amasa Hines at The Madrid

We love Tiny Desk Concerts, and HERE is a great one from Chicano Batman

A year ago, Chicano Batman was smokin’ hot coming out of Austin's SXSW festival. They’ve played in our area before, but this time they’re moving on up to a bigger room.

If you’re a fan of this column, 90.9 The Bridge, Tiny Desk Concerts and Middle of the Map Fest, bands like Chicano Batman were assembled just for you. It’s quirky indie rock, played by music nerds for music nerds. Don’t miss this chance to see them in a great space.

04/27 Marian Hill at The Truman

Watch Marian Hill perform “Down” at Coachella from two weeks ago HERE

I remember hearing Marian Hill on 90.9 The Bridge back in 2015 and thinking, what in the world was that? It’s poppy, it’s full of synths, there’s a sax solo, and the music doesn’t really follow a traditional structure — so yeah, naturally I loved it.

I was able to catch her at SXSW back then. The first time I saw her play in KC, it was to a small crowd at The Tank Room (RIP) and I remember being impressed with the audience so intently singing along to her songs. Shortly after that show, I heard her music in a Taco Bell commercial and from there, her trajectory changed.

Now she’s working her way up to HUGE font names on festival posters like St. Vincent or Grimes. Next stop for her is big auditoriums, so don’t miss this chance to catch her in the more intimate setting of The Truman.

04/27 Kevin Hart at Sprint Center

Kevin Hart, Conan O’Brien, Ice Cube and an intern get in a car. Hilarity ensues, watch HERE

Did you see the movie "The Secret Life of Pets?" In it, Kevin Hart voices the cute little bunny with a wicked mean streak, Snowball. If you missed the movie, have a look here.

Maybe you saw the Drivers Ed segment that Kevin Hart did on Conan with Ice Cube? That link is above.

And then there was his appearance on the YouTube sensation program, Hot Ones where Kevin Hart absolutely loses his mind!

I wasn’t too familiar with his comedy until I saw those things but the guy is absolutely hilarious and he can pull off an arena show. He last headlined at Sprint Center in 2015. From what fans have posted on Twitter — "Just saw in Manchester omg hilarious!! I think I broke a rib" — his show should be a good time.

04/28 Hembree/Dreamgirl/Y god Y at Granada

Watch Hembree play “Had It All” from a recent in studio performance at 90.9 The Bridge HERE

Imagine growing up a music-loving kid in the Midwest and every year, you tune into the Grammys and watch rock stars at this award show from your living room. Now, imagine being that kid, forming a band with some of your friends and eventually having your music air in a commercial that debuts during that awards show?

That’s how things are going for KC’s own, Hembree.

From the Grammys to the Winter Olympics, their song "Holy Water" became the featured music in an Apple commercial that aired several times during marquee events on TV. From that success and years of hard work 2018 is treating them really well. I should also add, they’re some of the nicest guys I’ve ever got to work with.

Best part: You can catch them at The Granada in Lawrence this weekend for only $5!

04/28 Grand Marquis album release show/Victor & Penny/Brandon Phillips & The Condition at Knuckleheads

Live from The Blue Room in KC’s Historic 18th & Vine Historic Jazz District HERE

Jump, jive and wail. That’s swing music. And KC's Grand Marquis are making it with the best of them. This week they’re celebrating the release of their new album, "Brighter Days." There’s the trumpet, the upright bass, the saxophone. On top of all of that is Bryan Redmond’s massive voice leading you through what will be a great night out on the town.

If you were a fan of Big Bad Voodoo Daddy (remember Swingers) or Squirrel Nut Zippers, you need to see Grand Marquis. And in case you missed it, they were recently the featured guest band on Star Sessions, a live weekly concert on Mondays at noon on The Kansas City Star’s Facebook page.
