As a four-time gold medalist, Simone Biles isn’t your typical 19-year-old.
That is, until you put her in the same room with her celebrity crush.
NBC’s “Today” revealed in a clip Wednesday morning that actor Zac Efron flew to Rio to surprise the American team of gymnasts after they finished their individual competitions — resulting in a meeting full of hugs, selfies and high-pitched screams.

Biles has made no secret of her love for the actor (she has a life-size cutout of him in her bedroom). When the team was interviewed on “Today” on Aug. 5, she asked him to come support the women gymnasts at the team final. She joked that her teammates would need to get a defibrillator if he really came.
Luckily, she didn’t need to be revived, even though she received a hug and a kiss on the cheek from Efron.
On the “Today” segment, Efron said he has been a fan of the gymnast for a long time.
“Their story just blew my mind,” Efron said. “When I found out Simone and this team were fans, I was like, ‘What kind of guy am I if I don’t show up?’ ’’
This wasn’t the first time Biles had been flustered by the actor. He tweeted her back in July, a couple of months after she had revealed on “The Ellen Show” that she had a crush on him.
Understandably, Biles freaked out — with no idea of what would come a month later.
Before surprising the gymnasts, Efron and broadcaster Hoda Kotb watched Biles compete in the floor routine. Efron, who sat in awe during her routine, said watching Biles compete gave him butterflies.
“Holy schnikes,” he said. “She gets so much air. What the heck is in her legs? And she looks happy — look at that. That’s amazing to me.”
Shortly after, Kotb brought the gymnasts into the broadcasting room for what seemed like just another interview. She reminded Biles about asking the actor to come to Rio, to which Biles responded, “If you bring him out, I’m going to pass out. Stop; you’re lying. No way, no way.”
All five gymnasts — Biles, Aly Raisman, Gabby Douglas, Laurie Hernandez and Madison Kocian — got hugs from the actor.
“I’m shaking,” Biles said. “I’m so …” she started before her voice rose a couple of octaves into a wordless squeal.
“Trust me; I’m not crazy,” she told Efron.
While she had forgotten to do her signature wink in her routine, she made up for it by winking at Efron — and then dissolving into a fit of giggles.
A flustered Hernandez said, “He’s even more gorgeous in person.”
