Right after winning the British Open on Sunday, Rory McIlroy appeared to stiff a young boy asking for an autograph. But things aren’t always as they appear.

After folks saw the incident go down on TV they took to Twitter to slam the Northern Irish golfer.

One Irish politician, Ciaran Cannon, tweeted: “Mr. McIlroy denying a child the two seconds it would have taken for an autograph says much about him as an individual.”

But fellow golfer Ian Poulter used Twitter himself to defend his colleague. He tweeted: “Just to clear up the signature thing. We are asked not to sign autographs until we have officially handed in our scorecards. #RulesAreRules.”

Good to know. But we still feel sorry for the boy. #DissedOnNationalTV.
