Gilles Marini dances with pain

Marc Malkin Gilles Marini

will have surgery on a separated shoulder he suffered after he began training for "Dancing with the Stars."

"I don't really like to talk about it," Marini says. "I don't want people to pity me."

Marini, who dances with

Cheryl Burke

, won't have the procedure until after the season ends. The operation will sideline him during three weeks of recovery.

He alluded to the pain Monday night when judges

Bruno Tonioli Carrie Ann Inaba

knocked him for the funny way he was holding his arms. Carrie Ann likened his weird hands during the jive to a squirrel.

Malkin got Marini to spill about two other issues.

Marini was seen last night running into the audience and kissing his wife after he and Burke danced. He said he kisses his wife before and after every show, but no one sees it. "I was getting a lot of s--t online: 'Why don't you give your wife any props?' I was like, 'Are they crazy?' But then I realized they don't see it."

And, he's taking scissors to those gorgeous French locks for next week's show.

"I'm going full on," Marini says. "I'm not messing with anything. I want to show that a non-dancer with no experience at all, ever, can pull it off - because that makes you and everybody else know that they could do it, too."
