Good thing she never dreamed of having a white-dress wedding, because reports indicate that Sean Penn and Charlize Theron have split up after more than a year together, according to Us Weekly.

Sources tell the magazine that Theron, 39, was the one who called things off after their recent trip together to the Cannes Film Festival. Though they had known each other for two decades, they became a couple in December 2013.

Some reports suggested that Penn, 54, had proposed to her in Paris in December.

If they were engaged, there was never a ring produced to show for it. But that’s apparently not how Theron rolls.

“I never had the dream of the white dress," she told Vogue in May. “Watching other people getting married? . . . It just looks like a lot of work. And as you get older, you start sifting through the stuff that really matters.”

Penn’s previous wives include Madonna and actress Robin Wright, with whom he has two grown children. Theron, who has an adopted son, has been in relationships with actors Craig Bierko and Stuart Townsend.

In a case of unfortunate timing, Theron appears on the June cover of Elle UK, where she says in an interview that Penn is “the love of my life.”
