Epic is a word that is so over-used these days, but there really is no other way to describe John Oliver’s skewering Sunday of the Miss America pageant.
Yes, beauty pageants are easy targets.
The mind-numbingly complex questions that contestants are asked to answer in just 20 seconds. (Hey, solve the ISIS crisis!) The butt glue used to hold bikini bottoms in place. The “inexplicable ventriloquism” talents that Oliver pointed out.
He mocked how contestants are still, in 2014, judged by their bikini bodies.
“Right, you need to see them in bathing suits because as we all know the intelligence portion of the brain is located somewhere on the upper thigh,” said Oliver, the host of HBO's “Last Week Tonight.”
But he and his staff apparently spent the days since last weekend’s pageant investigating the organization’s claim about all the scholarship money it provides.
“If it's actually true that Miss America is the world's largest provider of scholarships for women, that's a little bit weird because Miss America does not offer scholarships to all women," Oliver said. “Only those who compete in those pageants.”
Miss America brags that it provides $45 million in scholarships to women every year, but Oliver revealed the squishy math behind that number and, apparently, things don’t add up.
