Just a few days after tabloid headlines screamed about Dakota Meyer’s “secret wife,” Bristol Palin has called off her wedding to the former Marine and Medal of Honor recipient.

Bristol’s mother, Sarah Palin, made the announcement on Facebook Monday.

“Bristol and Dakota couldn't be more thankful for the love and support of family and friends over the past months while preparing for their wedding,” Sarah Palin wrote.

“They have informed loved ones that unfortunately the announced celebration planned for May 23 will not be held.”

Bristol, 24, and Meyer, 26, announced their engagement in March 2015.

Just last week stories surfaced that Meyer had been married before and that he had kept that bit of news hidden from Bristol. The Daily Mail and other outlets reported that Meyer married Cassandra Wain in Campbellsville, Kentucky, in May 2008.

A friend of Wain’s attacked Meyer in The Daily Mail, telling him to come clean about his former relationship because Wain didn’t deserve to be part of his “mess.”

It’s not clear from Palin’s Facebook post if the engagement is off or the wedding has been moved to another date.

Sarah Palin wrote that both families would gather for a barbecue in Kentucky, where the wedding was scheduled to take place, to “celebrate life, in general!”

She also posted this statement from Bristol:

“Regarding salacious headlines in recent days about 'secret wives,' Dakota and I discussed our past relationships prior to our engagement. Dakota was legally divorced years ago, as any good reporter could and should have disclosed to readers.

“As usual, false stories and dramatically written headlines begging controversy should be disregarded, and we have faith that our privacy will be respected at this time by those with decency.”
