Men’s beards seem to be having a moment, but according to one Albuquerque, New Mexico, news station, they also may be as dirty as the toilet you sit on.
The station took swabs of men’s beards and took them to Quest Diagnostics, where microbiologist John Golobic said some swabs contained bacteria “comparable to toilets.”
According to ABC, the bacteria aren’t so much harmful as a case of bad hygiene.

If you happen to have a lengthy beard, a good scrubbing should dramatically reduce the amount of bacteria on your face, the news station said.
If you’re still slightly grossed out, don’t panic; a journalist from The Guardian pointed out that the results did not stem from a scientific study, but from a single microbiologist.
A post in The Washington Post’s science blog also makes note of the fact that humans are covered in bacteria anyway, so this study is nothing to write home about.
Whether you believe the report or not, we suggest you take the safe route and wash your beard. At least once a day.
