Madonna took a nasty and rather terrifying fall backwards down a staircase on stage at the Brit Awards in London on Wednesday while performing her new single, “Living For Love.”
Video of the spill makes it appear that she was dragged down when a dancer grabbed the cape she was wearing to yank it off her shoulders.
But instead, she and the cape went flying down two tall stairs.
The BBC reports that the audience in London’s O2 arena gasped when she fell onto her back.

She missed a few lines of the song as she picked herself up; onlookers noted that she sounded a little shaky.
She verified a wardrobe malfunction later on her Instagram page where she posted a designer’s sketch of her costume.
“Armani hooked me up! My beautiful cape was tied too tight! But nothing can stop me and love really lifted me up! Thanks for your good wishes! I'm fine! ❤️#livingforlove,” she wrote.
Sadly, it was Madonna’s first time performing at this award show in 20 years.
Ironically – and gleefully pointed out by many, many, many entertainment websites – the song she was singing includes the lyrics “watched me stumble.”
