Leave it to a firefighter to get the job done correctly and efficiently.
Sunday night before Game 5 at Citi Field, New York firefighter Frank Pizzaro delivered the best and most stirring rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” so far in the 2015 World Series. Brief — about 86 seconds — and emphatic, it showed off Pizzaro’s vocal power and agility. He resorted to no moments of swagger or strut. Instead, he served the song and the moment, staying true to the melody but imbuing it with the right amount of emotion and flair.
Pizzaro followed a charming performance of “America the Beautiful” by music legend Tony Bennett, a New York native, who was supported by students from the Frank Sinatra School of Arts, founded by Bennett and his wife, Susan Benedetto.
