Lionel Richie has a bum knee, and it has forced him to postpone his tour with Mariah Carey until summer. Among the shows postponed: the April 16 show at the Sprint Center.

In a statement released Friday, Richie said: “When you have been performing as long as I have it takes a toll on your body. Unfortunately my recovery from a knee procedure will not have me 100 percent ready to start the tour next month. I don’t want to disappoint my fans and I look forward to being back on stage so we can all be ‘Dancing on the Ceiling’ together again.”

Tickets for the April 16 show will be honored for the new date, which will be announced soon.

Richie last performed in this area in 2001 as part of the Red White and Boom festival. He was on a bill that also included Billy Idol, Ricky Martin and Uncle Kracker. His previous headlining show in Kansas City was at Kemper Arena in 2000.
