Jazz Town | New book ‘The Jazz Standards’ examines familiar tunes

We hear enough about the so-called Great American Songbook and its sway over jazz. And there are plenty of books about those songs, but what about the rest of the jazz repertoire? Ted Gioia’s new book, “The Jazz Standards,” tries to do for the songs at the core of the jazz consciousness what others have done for the Tin Pan Alley and Broadway standards.
