Four Kansas City area individuals or organizations received the 2008 Ethics in Business Awards Thursday night.
The second annual event, sponsored by Midwest Christian Counseling Center, attracted about 400 people to a dinner at the Hyatt Regency Crown Center hotel.
In the nonprofit category, the award went to Cancer Action, an organization that, for free, provides assistance to improve the quality of life for those living with cancer.
The organization’s “honest and direct” communication by employees and volunteers with clients was applauded.
In the business category, two honors were given. One was presented to Central FiberCorp., an environmentally conscious manufacturer of products made primarily from recycled newsprint and hardwood chips.
The company operates by the creed, “We will not make any product that could cause our employees or customers any harm.”
JE Dunn Construction received the other business award for its long and strong record of giving back to the community and its reputation for developing employment for minorities and women in the construction industry.
The company also was cited for a strong code of ethics and being “known for returning their profit to the customer because they feel they have already made enough money on the project.”
Robert Miller, founder of the Robert E. Miller Insurance Agency, earned the individual business leader award for his “selfless service and generous philanthropy” to many charities and civic causes.
“He tells his family the ‘final exam’ is about what you give away,” the presentation noted.
