Be a hot dog at Kauffman

The Royals’ season may be turning increasingly grim, but humor can still be found in the on-field Hot Dog Derby.

The team is seizing on the entertainment value of the run by letting fans enter an online drawing to run in the derby during the Sept. 19-21 home series, which is fan appreciation weekend.

Three winners of the sweepstakes will be able to play ketchup, hot dog or relish. They also will get four dugout plaza seats to the game and, of course, hot dogs. This should bring a lot of friends and family to the park to watch the racers trip over themselves. Details are on royals.com.

From hot dogs to José Guillen, the Royals’ staff at Kauffman was put on the spot Tuesday when a fan heckled Guillen to the point where he had to be restrained to avoid possible retaliation.

Security personnel moved the fan to another section instead of kicking him out of the park. What’s more, the Royals gave the fan two tickets to a future game (perhaps for seats away from the Royals’ dugout). General Manager Dayton Moore has admonished Guillen for how he reacted to the fan.

I think the Royals handled the situation properly and in the best interests of fans.

I don’t know how loudly or continuously the fan carried on, but there comes a point when other fans should be spared listening to someone’s tirade. A certain amount of yelling at the park is acceptable, but I have changed seats rather than listen to someone go on and on.

As for Guillen, I rarely feel sorry for players who get heckled — especially if they are making $10 million or more. That comes with the territory of a highly public life. Let it go, José.

On online poll on royals.com shows that fans think Mike Aviles will be a better hitter in 2012 than will Billy Butler. Who would have thought that a few months ago? Alex Gordon is the top pick and David DeJesus is a somewhat distant fourth.
