Red Sox series “premium” but shop around

The only series with the Boston Red Sox at Kauffman on Aug. 4 to 6 are “premium” games, meaning prices are $5 to $7 more per ticket because of expected high demand to see the defending World Series champs.

But plenty of people are selling Sox tickets on Craigslist and through ticket brokers. Even the Royals have an online auction to sell several sets of prime seats for all of those games. In numerous cases, however, there are no bids for the minimum face value price. A few seats are going for slightly higher than face value.

Tacking $5 or so on to the price of a ticket to see the Red Sox, Yankees and Cardinals irks some fans. I have a friend in Tampa who is a Yankee fan but refuses to go to their games in Tampa because he objects to the add-on cost of a ticket. Nonetheless, big crowds are expected for the Red Sox game at Kauffman, said Mark Tilson, vice president of sales and marketing.

In general, it’s smart to shop around if you are buying any Royals tickets, especially for weekday and Sunday games. Some sellers want you to think all games should bring the same price but that is not true. Even tickets for the Red Sox, who play on a Monday through Wednesday, may drop in price as the series nears. And for the home schedule from Aug. 22 on, pay face value maximum from private sellers or negotiate a discount. Plenty of season ticket holders make their seats available after school begins and attention turns elsewhere.

As you should know by now, the Royals have moved Saturday’s game against Chicago up to 2:55 p.m. because it will be televised nationally on Fox. A change from a night game to a day game may mess up more than a few ticket holders’ plans that day. Remember, though, that you can exchange tickets for that game for any other game on the schedule, but that must be done in person at Kauffman. Go out there any day this week or before game time on Saturday.
