Just ahead: Blue, pink and a tough schedule
Giveaways crowd the Royals’ home schedule for the second half of the season, starting when the first 20,000 fans get Frank White powder blue T-shirts this coming Tuesday.
But blue turns to pink two days later in what is expected to be the wildly-popular giveaway of pink rhinestone caps to the first 20,000 female fans, compliments of Meierotto Midwest Jewelers. The Thursday game will be preceded by a “Girls Night Out” party in parking lot H northwest of the park. Package ticket purchases include a $5 donation to the American Heart Association. See details on the Royals.com home page.
Last year, I got to pink cap night with my wife and 5-year-old daughter an hour before the game and the caps were long gone. (Daughter cried, of course.) Not seeing all that many pink caps in the crowd, we were skeptical that as many were given out as advertised, but the Royals say the numbers of giveaway items are audited and accurate. Some people get free items and never go in the park. Last year, only 10,000 caps went out so you should have better luck getting a cap this year.
Looking further ahead, the Royals will give away Dan Quisenberry bobbleheads on July 26, camouflage caps on Aug. 2 and Larry Gura bobbleheads on Aug. 9. All are Saturday night games. Sluggerrr T-Shirts will be handed out Aug. 10.
As for baseball itself, the schedule is not an easy one for the Royals. All of the games could mean something to division races, even if the Royals aren’t in the running. The Royals play the reawakening Tigers, second-place Twins and first-place White Sox from the Central Division. They also host A.L. East leader Boston and second place Tampa Bay, along with Texas, which also has a winning record. September brings some relief.
