Create your own photo book

Old-school scrapbooking can be messy and time-consuming.

This year, try uploading the best of your digital Thanksgiving Day pics and produce a photo book online instead. Even if you’re a newbie, you can create a keepsake that looks like a professionally made coffee table book.

Online templates make it easy to add captions, colorful backgrounds and accents, but some of the most beautiful books feature only photographs. Twenty-page softcover books, on average, start at about $30; hardcover books start at $40. Warning: prices go up fast if you add pages.

Go to these sites and click on “photo books”:

•Blurb.com. The best are the blog books, where you can combine blog entries with photos to create a cool book.

•Creativememories.com. The templates are easy to use, but before you create, you have to go through a consultant (there’s a “find a consultant” link on the site).

•Kolo.com. The customized photo books resemble the company’s stylish albums.

•Mypublisher.com. The Just Photos and Storyteller book styles are best, but also check out the Collage, Modern and Vintage styles.

•Photoworks.com. The square-shaped books are hip.

•Picaboo.com. Designs look like what you’d find in a traditional scrapbooking store.

•Qoop.com. The mini photo books are great — easily portable at 3 3/4 -by-2 1/4 inches. And the price is right, starting at $4.

•Shutterfly.com. The Martha Stewart photo books have places for pictures and recipes, perfect for Thanksgiving.
