Ron Freeman takes over as Grandview football coach

T here’s a new sheriff in town when it comes to Grandview High School football. His family’s name, however, is not new to folks in these parts.

Ron Freeman, father of Kansas State quarterback Josh Freeman, has taken the head coaching job at Grandview. It’s his first try as a head coach at the prep level. Josh played at Grandview, where he set multiple records, including 403 passing yards in a game.

“It’s a great opportunity,” said Freeman, 48, who played high school football in Boonville, Mo., and went on to play at Pittsburg State. “It’s more practical now for Friday nights because my sons have gone on to college.”

That includes Caleb, who will try to play for coach Gary Pinkel at Missouri as a freshman walk-on wide receiver or tight end.

Fortunately for the Freemans, Grandview does not have any games scheduled for Saturday. Ron and his wife, Teresa, will alternate Saturdays in terms of K-State and Mizzou football, meaning one will follow the Wildcats while the other tracks the Tigers one week, then vice versa the following week.

Memories of Annika

Although it no longer exists, it’s still hard not to think about the Children’s Mercy Hospital Golf Classic this time of year because you knew it was right around the bend.

When Annika Sorenstam announced Tuesday that she will retire at the end of 2008, memories of the golf classic came flooding back — flooding the operative word. When Sorenstam played in the golf classic 10 years ago on June 8, 1998, heavy rains (the course was drenched with 2 inches of rain, mostly before the action began) made the track treacherous.

“You need a canoe out here,” pro golf star Ernie Els told The Star early that day at Blue Hills Country Club in south Kansas City.

Sorenstam, though, provided the top shot, and it happened quickly. Her sand wedge from 95 yards for eagle at No. 1 prompted Sorenstam to high-five KC golf legend Tom Watson.

Mock, schmock

Is it too early for the 2009 NFL mock drafts?

Nah.

ESPN has one out, and it thinks the Chiefs will select Georgia quarterback Matt Stafford with the No. 3 overall pick(another Web site has KC taking Stafford with the No. 1 overall selection after trading up from No. 4 with Atlanta).

Another site has KC choosing Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow from Florida.

New look at park

There’s a new look at CommunityAmerica Ballpark, home to the T-Bones and the Wizards.

Think grass.

Immediately after the MIAA baseball tournament ended Sunday afternoon, Kentucky bluegrass was removed and is being replaced by Patriot Bermuda Grass, which is expected to be more durable for double-duty as the T-Bones and Wizards go about their business, according to T-Bones media director Tommy Thrall.
