Garcia takes first-round lead at TPC

This might be the right place for Sergio Garcia to end his victory drought. He hasn’t won in three years and is in a zero-for-53 skid on the PGA Tour.

On Thursday, however, Garcia put together his third straight impressive round at The Players Championship in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. The first two gave him a runner-up finish last year.

The 6-under 66 on Thursday gives Garcia, a native of Spain, a great start.

Garcia birdied all the par 5s and picked up a bonus birdie with a 50-foot putt on the 14th hole, building a 2-shot lead over Kenny Perry and Paul Goydos.

“At the end of the day, the only thing I can do is keep working on it, keep giving myself chances, and it’s going to happen,” Garcia said. “I feel like I’m getting closer and closer. At least now, I feel like I can do it, and it’s just a matter of being able to do it.”

LPGA TOUR
Mhairi McKay of Scotland shot a course record-tying 8-under 63 and has a 1-stroke lead over Annika Sorenstam and Sun Young Yoo in the Michelob Ultra Open at Williamsburg, Va. Lorena Ochoa and Diana D’Alessio are another stroke back at 65. Michelle Wie opened with a 4-over 75.
