Hideo Nomo’s career
Nomomania started with a trail of smoke. Nomo struck out at least seven in 21 of his 28 starts during his rookie season with the Dodgers in 1995. He finished with 236 strikeouts for the season, breaking Don Sutton’s club record of 209 in 1966, and set the Dodgers’ rookie single-game record with 16 Ks on June 14 against the Pirates.
Can’t hit this
Nomo is one of only four pitchers to throw a no-hitter in both leagues. He’s joined by Cy Young, Jim Bunning and Nolan Ryan.
<< Sept. 17, 1996 Dodgers at Rockies
Nomo is still the only pitcher to throw a no-hitter at Coors Field, and this was pre-humidor. He struck out eight and walked four in a 9-0 Dodgers win.
April 4, 2001 Red Sox at Orioles
In his first start for Boston, and in the second game of the season, Nomo struck out 11 and walked three in a 3-0 Red Sox win.
Double trouble
Nomo led the American League with 220 strikeouts in 2001. Coupled with his NL-high 236 in 1995, Nomo is one of 10 pitchers to record 200 or more strikeouts in both leagues.
Oh no
After winning 16 games for the third time in eight seasons in 2003, Nomo had shoulder surgery and struggled in 2004, going 4-11 with an 8.25 ERA for the Dodgers. He went 5-8 with a 7.24 ERA with Tampa Bay in 2005 and didn’t throw another pitch in the majors until this season with the Royals.
