Bastad, Sweden (SportsNetwork.com) - Two-time champion Tommy Robredo and fourth seed Jerzy Janowicz suffered second-round upsets Wednesday at the Swedish Open.
Renzo Olivo, a 22-year-old Argentine qualifier who is making his ATP World Tour debut this week, vanquished the second-seeded former top-10 star Robredo 7-6 (8-6), 6-3.
The 32-year-old Robredo titled here back in 2006 and 2008.
Meanwhile, rising Serb Dusan Lajovic was leading the 6-foot-8 Janowicz 6-3, 1-1 when the Pole retired on the red clay at Bastad Tennis Stadium.
Another upset was averted when fifth-seeded Portuguese Joao Sousa doused Swedish wild card Elias Ymer, 6-3, 7-5 and one other result saw Uruguay's Pablo Cuevas overcome Swedish wild card Christian Lindell 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) on Day 3.
In more second-round action here on Thursday, top-seeded Spaniard David Ferrer will meet Romanian Victor Hanescu, third-seeded Fernando Verdasco will tangle with qualifier and fellow Spaniard Albert Ramos-Vinolas and seventh-seeded Argentine Carlos Berlocq will be opposed by qualifier Radu Albot of Moldova. Berlocq beat Verdasco in last year's Bastad finale. Ferrer titled here in 2007 and 2012 and was the runner-up in 2011.
The 2014 Bastad titlist will collect $105,000.
