Border War not a national game, but still important

More News

From a national perspective, the Border War doesn’t carry the same clout as last year. But Missouri remains part of the BCS picture, as a potential participant and spoiler.

Before the Tigers can think about their postseason opportunities, there’s the matter of Kansas on Saturday at Arrowhead Stadium.

One of the nation’s fiercest rivalries became a showdown for the top ranking last season when the teams carried a combined 21-1 record into the game.

This year, Missouri is 9-2, the Jayhawks 6-5. The Tigers have already clinched the North, Kansas knows its headed to a bowl game.

“I’d say Phoenix is pretty likely,” Kansas athletic director Lew Perkins said.

That would be the site of the Insight Bowl, where the Jayhawks would take on a Big Ten team. Kansas is bowl eligible and is looking to play in the postseason in successive seasons for the first time in school history.

Missouri’s bowl picture is more fluid. The Tigers could land anywhere from the Fiesta Bowl to the Sun Bowl with several possibilities in between.

But if it’s the Fiesta Bowl, which is where the Big 12 champion lands if it’s not playing in the BCS title game, Missouri will have altered the national championship course.

That’s because the Tigers would have defeated the South Division champ in the Big 12 title game Dec. 6 at Arrowhead Stadium, perhaps knocking the conference from the title picture — like Oklahoma did to Mizzou last year.

The latest BCS standings have Alabama first, Texas second, Oklahoma third and Florida fourth.

The Crimson Tide and Gators stayed in the same spots as last weekend. The Longhorns jumped from third and the Sooners from fifth after their resounding victory over second-ranked Texas Tech on Saturday.

Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebe liked what he saw.

“I think it’s deserving, but I’m obviously prejudiced,” Beebe said. “The losses our (top) teams have had helped. You’re not going to get knocked that much.”

Only Alabama is undefeated among BCS conference schools. The loss by the Sooners and Longhorns came to teams ranked in the top five at the time. The Gators’ loss came at home to then-unranked Mississippi.

The Harris poll and USA Today poll of coaches think more highly of Florida than the computer poll average, which has Florida fourth. The Gators are second in the Harris and third in the coaches’ poll.

While there is clarity in the SEC — if Alabama or Florida wins out, it’s all but assured of being in the BCS title game — confusion reigns in the Big 12 South.

The BCS standings serve as the tie breaker if Oklahoma, Texas and Texas Tech finish 7-1. Although the Longhorns lead this week, the Sooners could nudge ahead by winning Saturday at 12th-ranked Oklahoma State.

But if Oklahoma loses in Stillwater and Texas Tech defeats Baylor, the Red Raiders will play Missouri in Kansas City with Texas possibly holding its spot in the BCS if it beats Texas A&M.

In that scenario, Tech could play for the Big 12 title, and Texas could play for the national title.
