Because of the success of the Fall Classic at Arrowhead Stadium, the Gorillas last ventured into Bearcat country in 2000.
Much has changed since that time. For one, the football stadium has been refurbished, and the name has changed from Rickenbrode Stadium to Bearcat Stadium.
“Someone said they have improved their stadium,” Pittsburg State coach Chuck Broyles said with a chuckle. “They are supposed to have a nice facility.”
But one thing remains the same: The high stakes. Pittsburg State, 11-1, and Northwest Missouri, 10-1, will meet at noon Saturday in an NCAA Division II playoff game, with the winner advancing to the quarterfinals.
Pittsburg State is also trying to avenge a 35-10 loss to the Bearcats on Oct. 4 in the last Fall Classic at Arrowhead. The Gorillas are just glad to still be playing, after rallying in the fourth quarter in beating Nebraska-Omaha 33-21 last Saturday in the first round.
“We don’t want to be done playing right now,” said Pittsburg State senior linebacker Rusty Morgan said. “When we were in the fourth quarter I was thinking, ‘I don’t want this to be my last game.’ ”
Those feelings will run rampant Saturday when these two prideful programs hook up again for what could be another classic in one of the best Division II rivalries in the country.
“We have looked forward to this since week six,” Pittsburg State senior quarterback Mark Smith said. “It’s going to be a big week. They are a great team. It’s a very important game for us.”
These two teams met in the playoffs in 2004 and ’05, and both games were in Pittsburg, Kan. The Gorillas won in 2004 and went on to play in the national championship game. Northwest Missouri won the next year 21-10 after getting thumped 56-35 by the Gorillas during the regular season.
“I think this game is really big for our fans to have the Gorillas come here,” Northwest Missouri coach Mel Tjeerdsma said. “There will be a lot of hype.
“For our players, we are thrilled to play another game at home.”
Can Pittsburg State turn the result around as Northwest Missouri did in 2005?
“You have to be aware of it,” Tjeerdsma said. “Our seniors were a part of that game. They have an idea what can happen. There is really not much difference in our two teams.”
Morgan remembers what happened in 2005 and hopes the Gorillas can do what Northwest Missouri did back then.
“I think it could definitely happen,” Morgan said. “I’m not saying it in a cocky way at all. I just feel confident the way our whole team is playing. Since Northwest beat us, it seems every week we have gotten better. I’m really looking forward to this game.”
•WHEN/WHERE: Noon Saturday in Maryville, Mo.
