USA Gymnastics defends coaches

One day after former Romanian gymnast Trudi Eberle Kollar alleged that Bela and Martha Karolyi had abused her nearly 30 years ago, USA Gymnastics said it had never received a complaint about either coach in the nearly 30 years they have been coaching in the U.S.

Kollar, a double silver medalist at the 1980 Olympics, said the Karolyis hit her when she was at the Romanian national training center in the late 1970s and early 1980s. She said she had never spoken publicly about the abuse because she was too scared. She now coaches in Sacramento, Calif.

In an interview with Romanian daily Cotidianul, Bela Karolyi said he feels no guilt for anything he did, but he did not deny striking her. “Some of the girls have bad memories. Perhaps others say it was the best time of their lives.”

Wimbledon buying back club

Wimbledon organizers, the All England Club, will pay $83 million to regain total control of the tournament, buying back the 50 percent it gave away in 1934 to Britain’s Lawn Tennis Association. The deal will allow the club to keep 10 percent of the profits instead of giving it all to the LTA. Last year the tournament generated a profit of $39 million.

Sorenstam’s farewell tour

She still has some silly-season events left, but the ADT Championship this week in West Palm Beach, Fla., is scheduled to be Annika Sorenstam’s farewell to the LPGA Tour. More than 50 friends and family, some of whom flew in from Sweden and around the globe, are on hand for her final event.

“Normally, I’m this cold Swede just going down the fairways,” Sorenstam said. “It’s been very different. But I’ve enjoyed it. It’s been a great year in so many ways. I’ve had a chance to summarize my career and had a chance to share my memories with a lot of fans.”

Finally, a rider happy with Lance

Carlos Sastre, the 2008 Tour de France winner, says he’s happy that Lance Armstrong is coming back this year, and he is looking forward to racing against Armstrong in the Giro d’Italia.

“To have Lance in front of me and to try to beat him is really nice,” Sastre said. “It will be his first Giro d’Italia, and there is where I will have an advantage over him. It is my fourth Giro.”
