Chiefs notes: McBride placed on injured reserve

More News

McBride’s season over

The Chiefs moved second-year defensive end Turk McBride to injured reserve Wednesday, the sixth regular to have his season end early because of an injury.

McBride had been suffering from a hurt right shoulder, and the team considered reserving him last week. But McBride played in Sunday’s loss to New Orleans, reinjuring his shoulder and cracking a bone in his forearm in the process.

“He’s had back luck on that one arm,” Chiefs coach Herm Edwards said.

The move further depletes a defensive front that has the league’s fewest sacks. Rookie end Brian Johnston was moved to injured reserve last week because of a calf injury, and third-year left end Tamba Hali has a knee injury that kept him out of the Saints game. Hali was limited in Wednesday’s practice.

The Chiefs signed two defenders to fill some of those spots, end Andy Studebaker and linebacker Curtis Gatewood. Both are rookies. Kansas City released linebacker Erik Walden.

Kick returner swap

Kansas City again swapped its kick returner, this time moving Dantrell Savage to the practice squad and promoting Jackie Battle to replace him.

Savage stepped in after B.J. Sams was released last month. Edwards said another rookie, Kevin Robinson, would be the primary kick returner with Battle as the backup. Savage had trouble fielding a kick during Sunday’s loss against New Orleans.

“We’re trying to be a little bit better on special teams,” Edwards said.

Bradley, Gonzalez hurt

Wide receiver Mark Bradley and tight end Tony Gonzalez also missed Wednesday’s practice, but Edwards said he hoped two of Tyler Thigpen’s favorite targets would be healthy enough to play against Buffalo.

Bradley hurt his calf, and Gonzalez has a knee injury.

Other injuries

Linebacker Derrick Johnson returned to full practice after missing the last two games because of a hamstring injury. Cornerbacks Patrick Surtain and Brandon Flowers, linebacker Pat Thomas and safety Jarrad Page were limited Wednesday. Right guard Adrian Jones missed practice.
