With Prince leaving, some Wildcats are torn over their plans

More News

In this doomed season of Kansas State football, sophomore cornerback Josh Moore and junior wide receivers Brandon Banks and Deon Murphy have been standouts.

But because Ron Prince, a man they consider a father figure and a friend, won’t be around next season, all three admitted recently that they’ve begun to question their futures, whether they’ll spend another season in Manhattan.

Junior quarterback Josh Freeman has a decision to make as well, and his involves the NFL.

If Prince were spiteful, he’d tell them all to leave. But he’s not, or at least he says he’s not.

“No one wants to see Kansas State successful more than I do,” he said.

He’s advising his players to practice patience and not rush into any decisions — in other words, avoid doing precisely what some might say Kansas State’s administration did to Prince when it fired him almost two weeks ago.

“Most of the kind of reactions that you get in these circumstances are usually emotional decisions, and most of those are hasty and usually not very well thought out,” Prince said. “Someone has to be the adult in these circumstances, and that’s the role I’ve tried to take.”

Moore, Banks and Murphy were not available Monday for comment, so Freeman elaborated on their behalf.

“I know they all came to play for coach Prince,” he said.

“It’s understandable they’d be talking about plans other than K-State, but realistically, most of those guys have one year left of eligibility.”

Freeman did, too, and he also has a year remaining. But he sounds conflicted about what happens next, insisting he’s happy being around his teammates — “I want to stay (and) I plan on being here,” Freeman said — but also admitting it’s “a business decision” that will, at the least, involve soliciting feedback from the NFL on where he might be drafted should he go early.

When he makes the decision, Freeman will consult his parents — and Prince.

“We talk about the future,” Freeman said. “But really, he says, ‘Do what’s best for you.’ He said if I ever need anything, to let him know, as far as advice. Honestly, it will come down to whether staying or leaving will benefit me the most.”

And that’s all that Prince said he wants for all of the Wildcats. He laughed Monday at the thought of being regarded as a friend to any of his players, but he said that stems from always being honest with them. For now, he has told them to concentrate solely on Iowa State. Everything else will sort itself out.

“When the games are over, the players will have decisions to make,” Prince said. “What I’ve tried to explain to them is, the reality is I recruited you to come to Kansas State and play … I understand the reality from a business standpoint for a lot of the kids, but these are emotional decisions …You have to step away from that. See who they hire, give the guy a chance to fit into his system, understand his philosophies, and most importantly, do well academically.

“That should be the focus.”
