Curlin headed to pasture

Reigning Horse of the Year Curlin will be retired next year and may already have run his last race.

“He always gave it his all and has done everything we have asked of him,” said Jess Jackson, who has an 80-percent stake in the horse. “I am looking forward to seeing his foals compete and possibly exceed his unequaled racing record.”

Curlin will remain in training for a possible race later this year, though there are not many options available.

Singh and Stanford win

•India’s JeevMilkha Singh closed with a 2-under 69 Sunday and won the $5 million Singapore Open by 1 stroke over Ernie Els and Padraig Harrington. Singh, who was 5 shots off the pace after the third round was completed earlier Sunday, finished at 7-under 277. Phil Mickelson, ranked No. 3, shot 75 and finished ninth.

Angela Stanford shot a 3-under par 69 and won to win the Lorena Ochoa Invitational in Guadalajara, Mexico. Brittany Lang, who was 7 under par on Sunday, and Annika Sorenstam finished in a tie for second, 1 shot back.

Miller edged in slalom

Bode Miller nearly pulled off an American double in a World Cup slalom event but was edged by Jean-Baptiste Grange of France by 0.79 seconds. It was Miller’s best slalom finish in four years.

Lindsey Vonn won the World Cup slalom on Saturday on Levi’s Black Course north of the Arctic Circle in Finland.

Pedregon drives to victory

Cruz Pedregon won his second NHRA funny-car season championship, and first in 16 years, with a victory Sunday at the Auto Club NHRA Finals in Pomona, Calif. Eddie Krawiec won his first POWERade Series crown in pro-stock motorcycle, and did so without winning a race during the season. Larry Dixon, Greg Anderson, and Chris Rivas also took race victories.

Swim records fall in Berlin

Randall Bal set a world record in the 50-meter backstroke on the last day of a short-course swimming World Cup meet in Berlin.

Paul Biedermann of Germany broke Ian Thorpe’s 8-year-old record in the 200 freestyle by finishing in 1 minute, 40.83 seconds.

Marieke Guehrer of Australia set a record, clocking 24.99 in the women’s 50 butterfly.

Elsewhere

•Seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong, who has feuded for years with Tour officials over drug-testing issues, plans to meet with Tour officials before deciding to compete in the 2009 race, according to Gazzetta dello Sport.

•Wizards forward/midfielder Davy Arnaud has been selected by U.S. national-team coach Gordon Bradley for the 20-man roster for Wednesday’s 2010 World Cup qualifier against Guatemala in Denver.
