Albert Pujols of the St. Louis Cardinals and Justin Morneau of the Minnesota Twins were each selected Monday as recipients of the Oscar Charleston Award, which the museum presents to the most valuable player in each league.
The ninth annual Legacy Awards dinner is 7 p.m. Jan. 10 at the Gem Theater.
“We believe that by honoring major-league baseball’s very best in the name of these legendary Negro Leaguers,” museum marketing director Bob Kendrick said, “that fans worldwide will gain a greater appreciation for just how talented the likes of Charleston and other greats of the Negro Leagues were.”
Pujols was also the Charleston winner in 2003 and 2005. He batted .357 with 37 homers and 116 RBIs while leading the National League in slugging percentage at .653 and finishing second in on-base percentage at .462.
Morneau batted .300 with 23 homers and 129 RBIs while playing in all of Minnesota’s 163 games.
The museum will also honor Toronto manager Cito Gaston with its Jackie Robinson Award for lifetime achievement. Kansas State president Jon Wefald will receive the Buck O’Neil Award for outstanding support of the museum.
Ticket prices for the Awards Dinner range from $75 to $150 and can be reserved by calling the museum at 816-221-1920. People can learn more about the museum at nlbm.com. All proceeds benefit the museum.
