Never say never, but the latest BCS standings indicate it would be difficult for anybody outside the Southeastern and Big 12 conferences to play for the national championship.
The nation’s strongest two conferences occupy the top five spots in the BCS. Alabama survived at LSU in overtime and remains No. 1, and Texas Tech hammered Oklahoma State and strengthened its position at No. 2.
Texas is third, followed by Florida and Oklahoma.
The two-conference stranglehold happened because of Penn State’s last-second loss to Iowa 24-23. The Nittany Lions entered the weekend undefeated like the Crimson Tide and Red Raiders and third in the BCS standings.
Penn State fell to eighth.
Southern California is sixth, Utah seventh, Boise State ninth and Georgia 10th.
The top two teams in the final BCS standings, compiled after the conference championship games, play for the national championship.
It’s not impossible for a team to come off the pace late in the season to reach the title game. Last year, Ohio State lost its second-to-last regular-season game, fell to seventh in the BCS standings but wound up in the title game when most of the teams ahead of it lost.
Showdowns remain among the top five teams. Texas Tech visits Oklahoma on Nov. 22. The SEC title is going to match Florida and Alabama.
The team that might be in the best position is Texas. The Longhorns have no games remaining against any of the top five teams.
In the polls, Texas Tech, Texas and Oklahoma are in the top five, and Missouri climbed to No. 11 in the USA Today coaches’ poll and No. 12 in the Associated Press poll.
Oklahoma State fell to 11th in AP and 13th in USA Today.
