Jankovic triumphs at Qatar tourney

Top-ranked Jelena Jankovic defeated fourth-ranked Ana Ivanovic 6-3, 6-4 Tuesday in round-robin play at the Women’s Tennis Association’s season-ending Sony Ericsson Championships in Doha, Qatar.

Eighth-ranked Venus Williams defeated No. 2 Dinara Safina 7-5, 6-3, and No. 9 Vera Zvonareva defeated No. 7 Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-2, 6-3.

Rafael Nadal has tendinitis in his right knee and could be in doubt for Spain’s Davis Cup final against Argentina.

Hamilton’s father decries abuse

The father of new Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton said racial abuse and other insults directed at his son and family led him to consider withdrawing his son from the sport.

Anthony Hamilton expressed dismay at what he described as a hate campaign against his son, who finished fifth in Sunday’s season-ending Brazilian Grand Prix and became the youngest (age 23) and first black driver to win the F1 season title.

Bass event begins today

Big-time fishing will come to Junction City, Kan., this week. Fifty-five amateur fishermen from 47 states and six foreign countries will compete in the BASS Federation Nation Championship today through Friday.

At stake? Six berths in pro bass fishing’s biggest event, the Bassmaster Classic. Actually, the Kansas event will be six tournaments in one. The top fisherman in each of six divisions will automatically win berths in the Classic.

The fishermen will launch each day at 7:05 a.m. from Milford State Park. Weigh-ins will start at 3 p.m. at Heritage Park in downtown Junction City.

•Former baseball star Jose Canseco pleaded guilty in federal court in San Diego to a misdemeanor offense of trying to bring a fertility drug across the border from Mexico. He was sentenced to 12 months’ unsupervised probation.

Hasim Rahman has stepped in to challenge Wladimir Klitschko for his IBF heavyweight title Dec. 13 in Germany. He is replacing injured Alexander Povetkin.
