Maclin will return if he’s not a first-round pick
Missouri All-American Jeremy Maclin will return for his junior season in 2009 unless he is assured of being a first-round pick in the NFL draft next summer.
“Any sophomore or junior who leaves early and doesn’t go in the first round, that’s not a very smart decision,” Maclin said Monday.
“If you can’t refine your game this last year or two years to get to that point, I don’t understand what the point is.”
Perhaps MU fans should not take too much solace just now. Maclin is currently ranked No. 7 overall by Scouts Inc.’s Top 32 list on ESPN.com. NFLdraftdog.com projects Maclin as the 27th pick of the first round.
Maclin earned All-America honors as a redshirt freshman all-purpose player. His 2,776 yards running, receiving and on punt and kickoff returns was an NCAA Division I-A single-season freshman record.
This season, Maclin is second nationally and leading the Big 12 with an average of 189.57 all-purpose yards. Last Saturday at Baylor, Maclin broke the MU career record for all-purpose yards that was set in four years by Brad Smith.
•MU coach Gary Pinkel on Monday listed tight end Chase Coffman as doubtful to play against Kansas State on Saturday because of a turf toe injury.
MU quarterback Chase Daniel had another diagnosis based on Coffman’s brother being a backup quarterback at K-State and their father having played there as a tight end.
“He’ll play,” Daniel said.
Said Coffman: “It looks pretty good. I’m going to do everything in my power to get out there on the field.”
•Place kicker Jeff Wolfert is a finalist for the Lou Groza Award, one of 20 college kickers on the list. Wolfert has made all 163 extra points in his MU career and 52 of 62 field goals. At 95.6 percent accuracy on combined kicks, Wolfert is on pace to break the NCAA record (93.3) held by UCLA’s John Lee (1982-’85).
