Behind a stifling defense and the scoring combination of juniors Danielle McCray and Sade Morris, the Kansas women’s basketball team dominated Fort Hays State 93-37 in an exhibition opener Sunday in Lawrence.
Meanwhile, Kansas State’s strong second half broke open a tight game as the Wildcats beat Washburn 66-47 in an exhibition game in Manhattan.
McCray led all Jayhawks in scoring with 20 points. The Olathe native also chipped in seven rebounds and four steals. Morris added 14 points.
For the Wildcats, junior Ashley Sweat had 17 points and senior Shalee Lehning added 14.
Lance is looking good
Lance Armstrong looks ready to come out of retirement right now.
Armstrong won the individual time trial of the 25th annual Tour de Gruene, covering 16 miles in 33 minutes, 14 seconds to finish nearly two minutes ahead of runner-up Erick Benz in the race along the Guadalupe River on Saturday in Texas.
Armstrong, a seven-time Tour de France champion, announced in September that he was ending a three-year retirement to draw more attention to his global campaign to fight cancer. But a lukewarm response from organizers and renewed rumors about doping have cooled his enthusiasm. He will race the Giro d’Italia in May.
Mare sells for record $14 million
Better Than Honour was even better than advertised Sunday night at Fasig-Tipton’s thoroughbred sale, shattering the all-time sales record for a broodmare.
Southern Equine’s Michael Moreno, who owned 70 percent of the 2007 broodmare of the year, bid $14 million to keep her — a price that eclipsed the previous broodmare record by $3.5 million.
Earlier during the sale at Lexington, Ky., Michael Iavarone, the owner of Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Big Brown, added the nation’s top juvenile filly to his stable with a $5.7 million purchase of Stardom Bound.
An honor for Ballesteros
The European Tour is looking to pay tribute to the ailing Seve Ballesteros.
European Tour chief executive George O’Grady said that a player of the year award voted by players was being discussed, while the tour was also keen for the Seve Trophy tournament to be hosted in Spain in 2009.
Ballesteros remains in stable condition in the intensive care unit of Madrid’s La Paz hospital after undergoing three operations on a cancerous brain tumor.
